Montanuniversität Leoben, formerly known as the University of Mining, has a rich history dating back to the 19th century. Its origins can be traced to the need for academically trained experts in Alpine mining and metallurgy in the early 1800s. Founded in 1814 as the "Steiermärkisch-Ständische Montanlehranstalt," it aimed to provide high-level education in mining and metallurgy. Over the years, the institution evolved, eventually becoming the Imperial and Royal School of Mining.

In 1904, it was renamed the "University of Mining" and granted the authority to award doctoral degrees. Despite facing challenges during World War I and World War II, the university continued its educational mission.

In the post-war period, the university experienced growth and introduced new fields of study. By the late 20th century, it had expanded both in terms of academic programs and campus infrastructure. In 1975, it adopted the name Montanuniversität Leoben and transitioned to offering only Bachelor's and Master's programs.

The campus expanded to accommodate a growing student population, reaching a record 3,700 students in 2014. Several buildings, such as the Roh- und Werkstoffzentrum (RWZ), IZW (Impulszentrum für Werkstoffe), and Kunststofftechnik-Institute, were added or renovated. The university's commitment to research and innovation is evident through centers like the MCL and PCCL.

Montanuniversität Leoben continues to evolve, with new study programs introduced, such as Industrial Energy Technology and Industrial Data Science. With its rich history and dedication to academic excellence, it remains a vital institution in the field of mining, metallurgy, and materials science.
